A storm is about to hit earthquake-ravaged Haiti, but it's expected to bring hope instead of fear.
PLAN Haiti, a collaborative architecture design exercise, is modeled after similar projects in the past, called BIMStorms. BIMStorm concept is the brainchild of KImon Onuma, founder and principal of Onuma Inc., which develops and markets a collaborative architecture platform called Onuma System.
"Now it’s Time to Help Haiti," announce the organizers of Plan Haiti. "Join us in Planning the Future of Haiti the BIMStorm way. We need your support and input. You can support the effort through the Internet from anywhere in the world. This is an opportunity to harness our energy, and use BIMStorm participant’s knowledge to change how we respond as an industry. We are looking for your input."
Onuma System is a web-enabled BIM (building information modeling) tool, designed to be accessible from standard web browsers with little or no installation. The company writes, "Don't be intimidated by BIM technology. It's really easier than you think. BIMming isn't just for the geeks ... From principals with all the design knowledge, to the recently hired intern, anyone with Excel skills can be a BIMmer!"
Kimon Onuma has organized and held BIMStorms for many projects worldwide, including New Orleans (nicknamed The Big Easy Way); Boston; London; Tokyo, Japan; and Oslo, Norway. The online planning platform is used by experts, observers, and participants from around the world to work together during these design exercises. It's compatible with Autodesk Revit, ArchiCAD, SketchUp, Ecotect, Excel, and NavisWorks, among others.
"We have close to 150 people signed up from 22 countries [for Haiti]," said Kimon Onuma. "This is a different type of BIMStorm. Previous BIMStorms have been done in 24-48 hours. This one will stretch out over some time, responding to the disaster in Haiti."
For this project, Onuma Inc. struck a partnership with Phi Cubed, responsible for the Strategic Alliance for Haiti. Plan Haiti participants will link geographic information modeling systems with BIM software, to study the damage caused by the disaster and to brainstorm on the best possible architectural remedy. This will allow each participants -- sustainability experts, architects, planners, emergency responders, and others -- to understand the project from various levels, from world view to site view to building view to interior view.
BIMStorm for Haiti is meant to help not just the displaced population but also the non-displaced population, ultimately leading to a more sustainable Haiti.

In addition, the majority of business transactions and processes are now also supports the Internet. Some also say that nothing is more impossible to use the Internet, as everyone seems to be readily available already.
